The Berhampore branch of the London Missionary Society (L.M.S.) was established in 1824, with Mr. Micaiah Hill dispatched from Calcutta to lead the mission. Mr. and Mrs. Hill launched seven schools for Hindu students and two for Muslim boys, while Mrs. Hill initiated a school for girls, later adding a second in 1827. Mr. Hill also established three native chapels and three preaching stations. In 1827, Mr. Gogerly joined the Hills to assist their efforts. A significant milestone came on January 7, 1829, with the completion of a large new chapel. To support church funding, Mr. Hill introduced mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing in 1838, employing orphans in the process. That year, Mr. Hill departed, succeeded by Mr. Lessel, but returned in 1842 to collaborate until 1847, when he was reassigned to Calcutta. Tragically, Mary Hill, Micaiah’s wife, passed away on September 7, 1847, at age 57. Micaiah Hill himself died on February 3, 1849, at 59, while traveling on a river near Benaras.
From 1879 to 1883, Mrs. Phillips oversaw the orphanage. In 1883, Miss Bloomfield arrived, enhancing women’s outreach, soon joined by Miss Robinson. Between 1890 and 1895, the Murshidabad district mission grew stronger with the addition of Reverend Andrew Sims, Alfred Joyce, Miss Tuck, Miss Cockerton, and Miss Nicholas, M.D., the latter marrying Joyce on February 17, 1897. Three native pastors—Kali Prasanna Mukerji (Berhampur), Paul Biswas (Jiaganj), and Surendra Kumar Ghose (Murshidabad)—also served. The Berhampur orphanage closed in 1896, leaving a Christian community of sixteen households on the challenging “magazine” land.
The current Congregational Church, built in 1925-26 on the site of the 1829 L.M.S. English Chapel founded by Reverend Hill, replaced the original structure damaged by the 1897 and 1918 earthquakes. Memorial tablets from the old chapel were preserved in the new building. The project’s success owed much to Reverend Kali Prasanna Mukherji, M.A., pastor from 1893 until his death in 1921, whose faith and dedication drove its realization. A re-dedication ceremony occurred on December 15, 1924, under Reverend Paul Biswas (died 1926), with the church opening for worship on January 1, 1927, during Reverend Surendra Kumar Ghosh’s tenure (died 1936). Additional pastors included:

The church, remains a testament to the L.M.S.’s enduring legacy, with its history enriched by community efforts and resilience against natural disasters. Today, it serves as a cultural and spiritual hub, hosting annual commemorations of its founding and restoration.
