Barrackpore Diocese

In 1950, during the General Council of the Anglican Communion’s Church of India, Pakistan, Burma, and Ceylon, Metropolitan Bishop Dr. Arvind Nath Mukherjee of the Calcutta Diocese announced the formation of the Barrackpore Diocese. This decision followed the earlier proposal of an East Bengal Diocese in 1944, which eventually led to the strategic division resulting in the establishment of Barrackpore as a separate ecclesiastical unit. On 14th October 1951, Bishop Dr. Ronald Winston Bryan was consecrated as the first Bishop of Barrackpore. Over the next five to six years, he laid the spiritual and administrative foundation of the diocese. His dedicated efforts culminated in the formal recognition of the Barrackpore Diocese on 26th August 1956, celebrated with the historic proclamation: “A Diocese in the making—Barrackpore Diocese is Born.”

The Barrackpore Diocese played a pivotal role in the unification of Protestant denominations in northern India and became one of the founding dioceses of the Church of North India (CNI) when it was inaugurated on 29th November 1970. Since then, the Diocese has grown in mission and outreach, fostering Christian witness, education, and social service across the region. Today, it covers four major civil districts of West Bengal—North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, and South 24 Parganas—shepherding numerous congregations, schools, and community initiatives under its jurisdiction. The Diocese continues to be a vibrant expression of faith, inclusivity, and service in the eastern region of India.
